'Proxime Accessit' - Guy + Anise.
~
...I suppose I need a TotA icon for this account now. ICON GOT. Though I might make myself a SRS one later to use instead.
This wasn't what I expected to write today, but it pleases me to have written something other than Naruto fanfiction. ...And of course it's mostly angst. If you haven't played/don't know anything about Tales of the Abyss, I doubt this drabble will make much sense to you.
Largely inspired by this fanart, found here.
[Guy + Anise. 'Proxime Accessit.']
“Do you ever wish you’d been able to stop her?”
The blonde swordsman looks up at the softly-spoken question, and the room is only dimly lit by the unsteady light of the fire on the hearth, but even in the half-dark his eyes still easily find hers. He’d thought he was the only one still awake, but somehow he’s not surprised to learn that she’s not asleep yet. Considering certain recent events, he expects she’s had more than a few sleepless nights these past few weeks.
“What?”
He can’t decide if she looks older or younger with her hair free rather than pulled back in the usual pigtails. The smooth tumble of curls frames her face, accentuating the childish roundness that adolescence has yet to remove from her features, but at the same time, it lends her an air of maturity that fits perfectly alongside the firm set of her mouth and the decidedly adult intensity of her eyes.
She betrays her youth by looking away before clarifying, as if she has to find the courage to do so elsewhere. “At the Tower of Rem…the replica of your sister.”
He betrays his age by looking away as well. “…She wasn’t Mary,” is his quiet reply as he watches the flickering shadows play across the wall behind her, though his words are hollow and haunted even in his own ears. As sharp as she is, he has little doubt that she can hear it, too. “I knew that…know that…”
“But a part of you still wanted her to be. And that part of you could still believe that she was your sister.”
The words come so firmly, so fervently, like she knows that very feeling herself and thus could recognise it in him too, and she can’t keep the pain out of them, not entirely. He can’t help but turn his gaze towards her again at that, concerned and compassionate, but she’s not looking at him: her eyes are fixed on the green-haired boy lying curled in the blankets beside her, his face relaxed in the untroubled sort of sleep reserved for very young children and the wholly innocent, a sleep long lost to every other person in that room.
“...Well, yeah,” he admits, his own gaze lingering on the boy’s face as well, a slight wistfulness entering his tone. “She was a replica, so she looked just like her.”
“Yes...” With gentle fingers and an even gentler expression, she brushes the hair back out of the sleeping boy’s eyes, her hand lightly tracing the curve of his face. “...And that was enough, wasn’t it.”
